Audio of a lecture delivered by Her Excellency Else Berit Eikeland (Ambassador to Canada from Norway) as part of the Munk-Gordon Arctic Speaker Series. During her speech, Ambassador Eikeland explained why the High North will be Norway's most important strategic priority area in the years ahead. In December 2006 the Norwegian government presented its High North Strategy which intends to enhance Norway's ability to exercise sovereignty and promote sustainable management of renewable and non-renewable resources. The strategy is aimed to maintain settlement patterns in the North and promote development that is conducive to co-operation with other countries and respects the rights of indigenous people. During her speech, the Ambassador also presents the Canadian and Norwegian common polar history, as well as examples of how Norway and Canada co-operate in the Arctic.
