Job Posting: Environmental Data Specialist

DataStream Initiative is a Canadian charity whose mission is to promote knowledge sharing and collaborative water stewardship, so our waters remain healthy for generations to come. Our core programming includes an online platform for sharing water quality data (“DataStream”), data management and water science training, network building, and advocating for open access to environmental data.

Reporting to the Data Services Manager, the Environmental Data Specialist will support the growth of DataStream, focusing on the Prairies and the North.

The ideal candidate is:

  • Technically strong in data management and capable of applying their skills to find practical solutions to support DataStream’s diverse users;
  • an excellent networker and communicator (both written and verbal); and
  • passionate about improving access to water data in Canada.

The salary range is $45,000 to $70,000 commensurate with experience. This is a full-time, one-year position with a competitive benefits package and the opportunity to become permanent. The position is remote and involves regular travel across Canada (with special focus on the Prairies and the North). Candidates must be legally eligible to work in Canada.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Working alongside DataStream’s national team, the Data Specialist will:

  • Grow DataStream’s user community, with special focus on the Prairies and the North;
  • lead outreach efforts and respond to the evolving needs of data stewards and users;
  • design and deliver presentations, training sessions, and webinars;
  • support the continual evolution of DataStream’s data schema
  • liaise with DataStream contributors and laboratories to streamline data import and export processes;
  • contribute technical expertise to inform key development workflows, such as ETL (extract, transform, load) processes;
  • provide input and perform testing on new DataStream features; and
  • maintain collaborative relationships with partners and advisors.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Fluent in English;
  • master’s degree, or equivalent work experience (3+ years), in data science, hydrogeology, limnology, aquatic ecology, hydrology, or related discipline;
  • strong communication and community engagement skills – can easily distill technical information to audiences with a range of water science and computer expertise;
  • experience managing large environmental datasets using systematic processes;
  • proficiency with Excel and Google sheets;
  • proficiency in a coding language for the purposes of data wrangling and cleaning (e.g., R or Python);
  • a self-starter who can work independently and as an effective team member; and
  • demonstrated track record in building and maintaining relationships.

Additional Desired Experience/Qualifications

  • French-language proficiency is an asset;
  • experience in water monitoring and research;
  • experience working with a software team;
  • experience working with federal, provincial or territorial governments;
  • experience working with Indigenous governments and organizations; and
  • strong preference will be given to applicants identifying as Indigenous (Inuit, First Nations or Métis).

This rapidly growing initiative is active in five hub regions across Canada where we engage with organizations including watershed organizations, Indigenous Nations and organizations, and governments at all levels.
