Reconnecting to Our Relations: The Need for Formal Land Claim and Self-Government Education in the Northwest Territories

Marlisa Brown is Nihtat Gwich’in, First Nation and of settler Canadian ancestry. Born in Inuvik, NT and raised in Somba k’e (Yellowknife, NT), both communities are her home.

Marlisa’s policy research paper explores what is in place to help people better understand self-government agreements and gives policy recommendations to further support this vital education.

Reconnecting to Our Relations: The Need for Formal Land Claim and Self-Government Education in the Northwest Territories recommends:

  • Digitizing land claim and self-government agreements to promote accessibility and usability
  • Creating or supporting summer student and internship positions
  • The creation of a Centre for Northern Indigenous Governance.

Marlisa is part of the fifth cohort of Jane Glassco Northern Fellows. Read the paper as an accessible online flipbook or download it as a pdf.

Jane Glassco Northern Fellows receive policy skills training, mentorship, and networking opportunities as they undertake individual public policy research.
